Protest March a roaring success

Local residents turn out in force to oppose open cast proposals

** Lead item on BBC Look North evening news ** Saturday 22 September 2012

Today, Hilltop Action Group and supporters marched around the perimeter of the site where Provectus propose to open cast mine coal to show their opposition to the plans.

Over 150 completed the 3 mile route in glorious sunshine – adults, children, dogs, pushchairs, mobility scooters. Many others came out to express their support as we passed. Passing cars sounded their horns in support.

We were joined in the latter stages of the march by Natascha Engel (MP for NE Derbyshire). When we stopped in the lay-by on the A61 she addressed the crowd giving her whole hearted support to the campaign and saying that there are no possible benefits in the scheme for local communities.

The campaign and protest march attracted significant interest from local and regional media – TV, radio, newspaper and online.

Provectus had to pay a contributor to their recent newsletter. Today shows that there are hundreds of local residents sufficiently incensed by these proposals to give their time freely to express their opposition.
